1959 was the first year for the Chevy El Camino and has certainly become one of the most desirable American classic cars in the market today with just 22,246 El Caminos were produced in the 59 model. Over the years, many of these cars were used as work horses and abused which means good ones like this are extremely hard to find.
History shows around 2014 the car was stripped apart for a full repaint here in Australia, the body was very straight with no rust or bog and only had one previous repair they could find which was completed well. The body was resprayed in gloss black while the chrome was refinished on the front and rear bumpers as well as the stainless trims being straightened and polished.
If you know these cars well, you will understand that they don’t reproduce the stainless trim on them. These parts tend to get beat up over years of use and to find one with trim as good as on this car is nearly impossible. There is a set of removable rear wheel spats and the car sits slammed to the ground thanks to air bag suspension. Tucked under the guards is a set of steel wheels with 59 Impala hubcaps on big Kontio whitewalls.
Inside the car is relatively true to how it would have left the factory. The factory dashboard and gauge clusters on these cars are iconic 50s styling. The bench seat has been retrimmed in red vinyl, new trims, carpet, all gauges & lights work as they should and there are some new Autometre gauges mounted under the dash for security with the manual valve controls for the air suspension.
A powerful Sony/Kickr sound system is built in and tucked away in the glovebox and behind the rear seat. Visibility from inside these Elco’s was a huge selling point in their day with big wrap around windows and thin pillars.
The inside of the tub has been neatly replaced & coated in a black durable. Under the bonnet now lives a 350hp, 383ci crate engine that features a new 600vac carby on an Edelbrock intake with new electronic ignition etc, tuned by John White race engines.
The cooling system has also been completely replaced to run cool as for endless cruising. The engine is paired to a Turbo 400 auto that is still column shifted.
A new Fat Pipes custom exhaust gives the Elco a nice smooth a relatively quiet rumble all tucked away. Some other upgrades include a disc brake conversion on the front end with dual master cylinder and the addition of power steering make this ElCo super easy, light and comfortable to drive.
Fully reliable, awesome cruiser that gets more attention than any car I’ve ever owned. 59 El Caminos rarely come up for sale. Was always top of my list to own one, and now can be your chance as well, whilst I have my eye on another vehicle currently.
