Seller's Description
1959 FERRARI 196S DINO RECREATION - Lot 38 PRICE: Auction Estimate: (AUD): $295,000 - $335,000 Chassis No: 1432 In the period it was customary for Ferrari to transfer their Grand Prix engines into a sportscar and the Dino V6 was no exception. Believed to be the final engine that Alfredino Ferrari worked on with the talented engineer Vittorio Jano, before his unfortunate and early death. The engine was initially developed for Formula 2 in 1957 with an engine displacement of 1.5 litres, the Dino V6 was quickly increased in size for Formula 1 in 1958 and less than a year later the engine had found its way into a Ferrari sportscar. With the new engine came a new naming policy with the first two figures indicated the displacement and the third the number of cylinders. This is how the Ferrari 196 got its name. Alberto Massimino designed the chassis and suspension with PininFarina and Scaglietti responsible for the bodies. The Sports Car body that the engine was designed for looks like a slightly smaller version of the famous 250 Testa Rossa, though the clear air intake scoop gives away the smaller cylinder count with six trumpets. The car had varying levels of success in motors sport with the like of Mike Hawthorn, Phil Hill, Wolfgang Von Trips and Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez. Ultimately Ferrari moved to larger displacement engines and the world of Sports Cars was starting to embrace the benefits of the mid-engine configuration, hence the 196S was a very limited production. This stunning 1959 Ferrari Dino 196 S Spider Recreation presented here for auction is believed to be have been hand-built in Italy as is faithful recreation of the original car. The space frame tubular chassis is skinned in full aluminium and was understood to be constructed in the 1980s. The car is fitted with the Dino 2.0 litre twin ignition all all-aluminium V6 engine with the exposed velocity stacks on top of the 3 two-barrel carburetors. Striking in Rosso Corsa livery with black leather seats. The currently owner purchased the car in America and imported it into Australia in late 2014. It had been owned by Peter Frahm from Beverley Glen CA 90025 and has its Californian Certificate of Title. Since importation, the car has had over $40,000 spent on mechanical works and maintenance carried out by Paul Chaleyer Historic and Vintage Restoration and Simon Gardiner / Mike Conway at Power Play (receipts available upon request). Sold with provenance paperwork which includes the Australian Import Approval, American Title and receipts. For more information, please refer to the Donington Auctions website.
