- Historical Background:
In response to the infamous “supercar scare” of 1972, Ford Australia was forced to cancel its highly anticipated XA GT-HO Phase 4 program. With a surplus of high-performance components already produced, Ford introduced the Regular Production Option 83 (RPO83) package. This strategic move integrated these performance parts into a limited run of Falcon GTs built between April and August 1973.
The RPO83 delivered a performance boost and have started to become highly sought after, celebrated for its rarity and the mystique of what could have been.
- Mechanicals:
Originally, this Falcon left the factory with a T-code 351 4V V8, but it has since been replaced with a period-correct 1973 D2AECA replacement block. It retains a Toploader 4-speed manual gearbox and features a rebuilt 9" limited-slip differential with receipts. The car also features Power Steering.
- Exterior & Interior:
The car was originally factory Calypso Green (J code), though it now sports a darker shade of green. Inside, the original Black Vinyl (Code B) trim has been replaced with cloth inserts. The vehicle is believed to retain its factory dashboard including the Superfringe Deluxe Push Button Radio and retains it wind back factory sunroof (untested), enhancing its collectability.
- Provenance:
Originally sold by Dominelli Ford in NSW, this RPO83 is backed up by a Ford Letter of Authorisation and an ACCHS Report showing this car to be optioned with the 83 ‘Performance Pack’. It was purchased in the early 2000’s by a well-known figure in the Ford Falcon GT circles as a barn find, who then sold it onto the current Vendor. Adored by its current owner and only being sold to fund a business venture, it bears the Victorian registration plates RRPO83 (sold separately), a tribute to its exclusive build and heritage.
- Condition
Though some corrosion is present in the doors, the overall body and floor pans seem to remain more solid, with options for either a high-end restoration, bit by bit restoration or continued enjoyment as is, being a running driving car. The mechanicals will need a checking over as suggested of any purchase of a classic car. The vendor has rectified various items enabling a driving car.
Potential buyers should evaluate its condition thoroughly and consider that it may require additional attention not mentioned, as is normal for un-restored Classic cars. As always, inspection is advised.
- Summary
This 8/73 Ford Falcon XA GT RPO83 is a remarkable piece of Ford Australia's history. Born from the necessity of repurposing Phase IV GT-HO components, the RPO83 models symbolize Ford Australia’s ingenuity and resilience.
