Introduced in 1997 Lotus unveiled their “Pocket Supercar”, the Elise Sport 190, taking the S1 Elise, fitting it with Lotus's 'Very High Performance Derivative' Rover 1.8L engine developing 190hp at 7000 rpm. The cylinder head, pistons, valves, crankshaft and flywheel were all modified, and solid valve lifters fitted. The development and selection of ultra lightweight competition accessories, including specially manufactured lightened front and rear bodywork, reduced the overall vehicle weight to 1477 lb. (670 kg). However this is one of just 5 Australian delivered S1 190 (believed to be the only road registered example) & was 1 of 3 out of the total 31 produced with optional Carbon Fibre Bodywork Clamshells, further reducing its weight by 5.5kg. These changes allowed an over 60% power increase from the standard S1 Elise's 118bhp, and saved just over 60kgs, allowing blistering acceleration, allowing 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds, and from 0-100 mph in 10.9 seconds! Stopping and cornering also have been refined. The race-developed brake pads and discs have been designed for optimum performance with racing slicks. In addition, competition springs and dampers lower the car by 50 mm while maintaining the car's roll axis relative to the ground, and a higher rate front anti-roll bar has been added.
