THE STORY Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2007, the first generation of the Maserati GranTurismo set a record for the most quickly developed car in the auto industry – going from design to production in just nine months. The architecture of the GranTurismo was a derivative of Maserati’s M139 platform from their fifth generation Quattriporte, with a shortened wheelbase and rear overhang. The engine was pushed back beyond the front wheels centerline and the chassis was constructed of stamped and boxed steel sections complimented by two aluminium subframes – one at the front supporting the engine and a tubular one at the rear supporting suspension and the differential. The first generation GranTurismo came equipped with a 4.2L (256ci) V8 Ferrari-sourced engine and two transmission options – a conventional torque converter 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed automated manual gearbox.
