2017 Historic Winton preview
Conducted by the Austin 7 Club, with assistance from the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria, the 41st Historic Winton will feature an estimated 400 classic cars and motorcycles competing over two days (27 – 28 May), across a number of classes and covering every era from the 1920s to the 1980s.
Themes for this year’s all-historic race meeting cover several automotive anniversaries, including 90 years of the Ford Model A and Volvo marque, 80th birthdays for the Lancia Aprilia and Austin 18, 70 years off the Standard Vanguard, Austin A40 and Ford Pilot, 60 years of the Fiat 500 and Nissan Skyline, and 50 years of the Aston Martin DBS, VE Valiant, Falcon GT and Holden Torana, to name a few, while 110 year milestones for Douglas and Excelsior (US) motorcycles will be recognised, as will the 80th Anniversary of the Triumph Speed Twin. Owners of these relevant makes and models are invited to bring them along for display in the paddock area.
This year’s Historic Winton will also mark 80 years of the Rob Roy hillclimb, with a special display of pre-1960 hillclimb machines.
In addition to this, the Shannons Classic Car Park will feature displays from a number of car and motorcycle clubs; while the Heritage Display welcomes everything from steam and traction engines to vintage farm machinery, speedway cars and bikes, vintage caravans, and even vintage speedboats.
The 41st Historic Winton kicks off on Friday 26 May with the Benalla & District Classic Car & Motorbike Tour. The tour starts at the Benalla Art Gallery (in front of Benalla Botanical Gardens) from 9:00AM and tours the region before returning for a ‘shine & show’ display.
Spectator entry is $30 Saturday and $35 Sunday, or $60 for a weekend pass, with kids 16 and under admitted free. Camping is available at the circuit and costs $25 per person per night. Contact Winton Motor Raceway on (03) 5760 7100 for camping rules and regs.
