Aussie Classics top Burns & Co’s October auction
Burns & Co. Auctions’ Classic Car & Motorbike Auction on Sunday, 23 October, delivered strong results across a variety or makes, models and eras, but Aussie classics led the way.
Of the 82 lots from this auction, that also included motorcycles and memorabilia, one of the top sellers was a 1971 Chrysler CH hardtop. One of 399 built and finished in ‘triple black’ (black paint, black paisley vinyl roof trim, black interior), this CH hardtop was well-equipped from the factory, with air conditioning, power windows, power front seats and a ‘self-search’ radio cassette deck.
Restored to a high standard between 2012 and 2014, this car was still running its original 360 V8 and a correct Torqueflite 727 automatic transmission.
From a South Australian owner and club registered in that state, the Chrysler hardtop sold for $165,125 (incl. buyer’s premium).
The other outstanding Chrysler from this auction was a 1974 VJ Charger that was originally a NSW Police highway patrol vehicle, but had been rebuilt as an R/T tribute.
What started as a rust-free car was stripped and repainted in the popular R/T ‘Magenta’, with all the correct R/T decals, striping, sports wheels and interior details included.
As consigned, the Charger was powered by a matching-numbers K Code 265 six and four-speed manual, with an odometer reading of 13,266 miles.
Despite being a R/T clone, this Charger still sold for $104,405 (incl. buyer’s premium).
Another Aussie classic to break the $100K mark was a 1969 Ford XW Falcon GT sedan, which had been with its most recent owner for 35 years.
Rebodied using a 1970 XW shell 30 years ago, the car retained its original doors and other parts, and while the correct 351 V8 sat in the engine, the four-speed Toploader manual had been replaced with an FMX automatic out of a Mach 1 Mustang.
Refurbished in August, this Candy Apple Red with black interior XW Falcon GT sold for $102,756 (incl. buyer’s premium).
Of the American offerings, one of the rarest was a 2004 Dodge Ram SRT-10 pickup that had been extensively modified, with its 8.3-litre V10 modified from the factory 500hp to produce a claimed 584hp.
Converted to RHD, with upgraded suspension and brakes, LED headlights and more, this unique, late model American pickup sold for $101,657 (incl. buyer’s premium).
