This latest giveaway car is no exception.
A new look Torana. . .
Debuting in March, 1974, the LH Series Holden Torana was the most “Australian” to that point, shedding the last remnants of the Vauxhall Viva that had been the basis for the original Torana of 1967.
Featuring an all-new body, the LH was also the first Torana with a V8 engine. Buyers could choose between a 253 (4.2-litre) or 308 (5.0-litre), matched to either a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic.
Of the many variants available in the LH Series, the ‘SL/R 5000’ was the top of the tree. Fitted with the 308 and four-speed as standard, it was capable of 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds and a top speed close to 200km/h.
The arrival of the LH Series also started a period of dominance for Holden in Australian Touring Car competition. The LH SL/R 5000 ‘L34’ won Bathurst in ’75 and ’76 before passing the torch to the LX ‘A9X’, which won in ’78 and ’79.
. . . with a Sting
Classics have given away plenty of great Toranas over the years, but this is one of the greatest. Valued at $206,000, this restored 1974 LH Torana is a genuine SL/R 5000, powered by a 308 SBC that’s been modernised with AFR heads, Aeroflow air cleaner and an alloy radiator. The transmission is a TH350 auto.
Other deviations from stock include an A9X-style bonnet scoop, aftermarket shifter and VX Commodore-era Sting Red paint. The distinctive black paintouts, SL/R 5000 decals and wheelarch flares are all there, while new alloys, in the style of Aunger Hotwire mags, maintain the aesthetic these Toranas had when new.
Inside, the seats have been retrimmed, with the doorcards, carpets and headlining like new.
The overall condition of this car has been described as excellent.
