Subaru launch 4th Gen WRX STI

Available in two versions - WRX STI and WRX STI Premium - starting price is $49,990 (+ ORCs) for the base model, a saving of $10,000 over the model it replaces. Also discounted, the $54,990 (+ ORCs) Premium adds a sunroof, BBS alloys, heated front seats, leather trim and power driver's seat, amongst other features.

The STI's powerplant is a 2.5-litre turbo horizontally-opposed Boxer that produces 221kW @ 6000rpm and 407Nm @ 4000rpm. This performance still meets EURO5 emission standards. A 4.5-second 0-100kph time is claimed.

AWD and a six-speed manual is standard, as is enhanced suspension and 'SI-Drive': three selectable drive modes to adjust throttle response to suit different driving needs. Unlike the WRX, the WRX STI does not offer the new auto trans option.

STI Styling follows that of the standard WRX, with the 'extended' A and C pillars, but with a more aggressive front spoiler, lower and wider bonnet scoop, rear diffuser, much larger rear wing (which can also be deleted at no cost), hawk eye headlights and, for the first time, daytime running lights.

The new STI is stiffer all round for improved handling, while the wheelbase is 25mm longer, improving rear seat comfort, while the cabin area is 15mm wider without increasing overall width.

Inside, a D-shaped steering wheel is new, with other features including a push-button start, reversing camera, bluetooth, harman kardon audio system, factory satnav, immobiliser, driver's knee airbag and soft-touch interior surfaces.
