Seller's Description
The SS was presented as a car for a motorist of discernment - a car for the discriminating - the keenly critical! In a stereotyped age, the SS stood alone boldly individualistic - daring to be different. At a time when mere cheapness was frequently of greater account then worth, the SS note of quality was insistent; while affinity between appearance and performance tended to become less, the SS offered both - in full measure. It was for the experienced motorist that the SS held the most obvious appeal - the motorist who could appreciate the fine surge of power that answered his or her demand of acceleration...the effortless control at speeds in the 70's and 80's (mph)...the total lack of fatigue after long journeys at high speeds. ABOUT THIS CAR In the late 1960's, when collectors were gathering up early SS cars, the focus then was on the more glamorous six-cylinder models, and prices escalated dramatically, this little four cylinder was overlooked and considered to be the poor relation of the marque. Time has proved that this model is now considered to be among the most desirable types because of the more balanced contours of the design, and its rarity. Our research indicates that only about a dozen of these are known to have survived, and it is believed that this is the only one in the Southern Hemisphere with the others being in Europe and the USA. When purchased by the last owner, back in 1968, the car had by then had at least 40 owners in NZ since its import in 1939. It was then in very poor condition with much modified bodywork, damaged chassis, incorrect instruments and an engine that was beyond repair. A complete strip down revealed that this was not going to be an easy task and the project mothballed. It wasn't until circa 1985, that a serious attempt at reconstruction was started. With the chassis realigned, body frame work renewed, and an uprated engine installed, it all started coming together as a viable project. The many hours spent resulted in a car that is true to the original concept and it has proved to be road worthy and reliable ever since. Some modifications should be noted here, as follows:- While the chassis and the running gear are strictly original, the old 10hp engine has been replaced with a later model Standard 14hp block. This has been over bored to 1820cc but has all the original 10hp accessories bolted to it except for carburetion. The engine is now fitted with twin SU carburettors (type D3) with a simple engine breathing system and has an harmonic balancer attached to the front pulley. the reason for these modifications is to extend the usable RPM range from 35600rpm to 4500rpm. Also the rear axle ratio has been changed to make use of the pulling power of the larger capacity engine. The Vehicle still retains the original braking system, which is cable operated.
