1963 ford thunderbird 3 sp automatic 2d coupe
Seller's Description
THE STORY By 1963 the Ford Thunderbird became an iconic symbol of luxury and performance, marking a bold chapter in the history of the Thunderbird lineage. What truly made the Thunderbird stand out for this model year was the addition of the 6.3L (390ci) Tri-Power V8, nicknamed ‘M-code’ due to the ‘M’ designation in the chassis number, which signified this incredible powerplant. The 1963 Thunderbird featured sleek and clean lines with a wide, low stance that exuded sophistication. Its signature cigar shape, combined with its sharp, angular tailfins and distinctive taillights gave the Thunderbird an unmistakable presence on the road. On the inside it was a showcase of comfort and innovation with plush seating and a fully equipped cockpit designed to cater to the needs of the discerning driver. Less than 280 ‘M’ code Tri-Power cars were ever built, and of those, only 27 were Coupes. With its impeccable design and advanced engineering, the 1963 'M' Code Thunderbird solidified its place as a timeless classic in American automotive history, remaining a coveted collector's item and an emblem of Ford's dedication to crafting exceptional vehicles. THE CAR Built in Boston and originally sold by Miller Ford to a ‘Louis Chocholaty’ who lived in Vestal, New York in the US, this impeccable example of a 1963 Ford Thunderbird ‘M’ Code Coupe was moved to Monterey, California shortly thereafter. A one-owner car for 47 years, it was imported to Australia in 2010. Presenting in gorgeous Diamond Blue with a Silver Mink vinyl interior, the car has undergone a lengthy labour of love under current ownership and has been fully restored inside and out. A comprehensive rebuild of the impressive 340 Horsepower Tri-Power 6.3L (390ci) V8 engine included a rebore, new pistons, a crankshaft regrind, new bearings and new head gaskets. All suspension units were removed bead-blasted and repainted. The 3-speed automatic transmission was dismantled, checked and reassembled with new seals and bearings. During the restoration the wheel arches, engine bay and the underside of the vehicle were also repainted. The classy interior features an immaculate dash and plump and luxurious seat foams, carpet and headlining. The car features a power front-seat adjustment and quarter window wind deflectors, alongside a solid and beautifully crafted steering wheel that is tactile and gives the drive a sense of quality. The power-steering is light and responsive. This car is a wolf in sheep’s clothing – a sedate cruiser that roars into life once you drop the hammer and take advantage of the triple carburettor setup. The VIN has been decoded by William Wonder, the author of the ‘Authentic Thunderbird Restoration Guide’ - and is the first Coupe and the earliest VIN number for a Hard Top ‘M’ code. Supplied with the vehicle is the original registered owner’s manual and delivery books, including the ‘Safe-T-Keep’ car papers given to the first owner on delivery, and the original build sheet. An extensive receipts folder has been kept for the restoration work. An incredibly rare example that turns heads everywhere she goes, this 1963 Ford Thunderbird ‘M’ Code Coupe is an absolute delight to drive and a collector’s dream. Currently on historic registration in SA.
