THE STORY The first Karmann-Ghia was introduced into Europe in 1955 and arrived in America as a coupe in 1956. The convertible became available in 1958 and was aimed squarely at the American market where a sportier look was desired. The cars were produced right through to 1974. The car combined the chassis and mechanicals of the Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle) with the styling of Italian Luigi Segre of Ghia and the hand-built bodywork of German Coach-builder Karmann. The model had a specifically crafted body manufactured by Karmann coachworks which called for many internal pressings to be welded together and to the main panels. Much manual labour was required to fill, file and sand all seam welds before painting. The result is a strikingly beautiful vehicle of timeless design that is inexpensive to run and maintain. Original engines were 1200cc and in 1961 a flat 1500cc engine design was unveiled. The seats, interior and dash were all of higher quality than it’s Beetle cousin and convertible models benefited from a padded convertible top with glass rear window (not plastic) that was easy to fold up and down. THE CAR This is a gorgeous example of the marque that has enjoyed a total rotisserie restoration back to bare metal that took over 5 years. The flawless red paint is striking and beautifully offset by the correct, factory cream interior. The wheels, chrome, bezels, taillight surrounds, badging and body trim are all correct and immaculate. This car has a black convertible top that is easy to use and a black parade boot to stow the top when folded down. An original restored wooden steering wheel, wooden gear shift knob and elegant original gauges grace the cockpit. The naturally aspirated Boxer 4-cylinder engine has been worked and tuned to well over 1500cc and sports twin weber carburettors. Power is transferred to the road by the 4-speed manual transmission and this car has fully independent torsion bar suspension. An outstanding example of the marque – very hard to find in this condition. Original books come with the car.
