You'd have to agree that Ford's XA Model line up for 1972 was pretty impressive. Not only was there a locally designed and engineered sedan range including the Falcon, Falcon 500, Futura, Fairmont and Ford GT, but there was also a coupe range, station wagon, utility and large luxury car range too. A pretty amazing offering for a small country in a highly competitive market crowded with cars from GMH, Chrysler and all the imports. According to the April 1972 issue of Wheels Magazine, "Ford's new XA Falcon is undoubtedly the most important model the company has ever released. Its bold new lines could carry Ford to sales leadership in Australia in the present decade. This is an all Australian conceived, engineered and styled product with locally manufactured engines used for the first time on an Australian Ford." Although much of the running gear was unchanged from the previous XY model, the engineers and designers had made significant changes to improve handling, quietness and comfort. Ford went all out with the station wagons and built them on the Fairlane’s 116 inch wheelbase for a total overall length of 16 ft 4.1 in., up 5.8 inches over the previous model. With the tailgate down, the maximum cargo length of the Falcon had grown 4.5 inches to 109.2 inches. Load capacity was up from 75.5 cubic feet to a massive 82.6 cubic feet.And the best feature of all on the wagons was the two-way rear door which opens down or out. According to Wheel magazine, "It's much more than a gimmick and gives Ford a major selling feature the others (HQ Holden and VH Valiant) lack."For sale is this TRUE SURVIVOR, one-off XA Fairmont Wagon. The current second owner of 10 years was lucky enough to track down this true barn find (as can be seen in the photos) covered in dust but in amazing original condition dry stored in country NSW. The original lady owner, Mrs. Shirley Stevens had ordered her Fairmont wagon in the standout Wild Violet paint scheme with the contrasting white vinyl trim and had selected the optional locally manufactured 240 bhp 302 V8 to power her ride.The car has had an external 2 Pac repaint in the mid 1990s and still presents in excellent condition with original paint in the engine bay, door jambs and boot areas. This car is gun barrel straight with no shopping trolley dents. The car was only resprayed due to the common fading suffered to the factory Wild Violet paint. A GS stripe has been added and looks great so one could be tempted to install a GS dash, steering wheel and 12 slots and carry the theme through to give the car a more sporty presence. Even the original FORD mudflaps are still in place and in perfect condition.The car is structurally perfect with only a small amount of rust coming through on the front passenger side lower door, a small area on the trunk door and a couple of bubbles on the bonnet. Inside, the car is remarkably original right down to the carpet. The trim is in unbelievable condition with only a small vinyl tear on the driver's seat and discolouration to the front door arm rests. Otherwise, the dash, steering wheel hoodlining, even the boot areas are all in excellent original condition. The car was originally sold through Cowcher Ford, Cessnock, NSW and comes with the original Owners log books, Owners manuals, day one NSW number plates with dealership number plate frame and has covered a genuine 34,799 miles since new. The original lady owner used the Wild Violet wagon only to take her West Highland terrier to dog shows in country NSW explaining the low mileage and excellent condition of the vehicle. The engine bay is day one correct with the all matching numbers 302 Cleveland V8 running perfectly through the original 2V carburettor, exhaust manifold and through to the single exhaust. The compliance plate and body numbers are perfect and there are clear remnants of the original factory stickers plus the "W" for White trim crayon marking on the radiator support and the factory dog tags showing the body colour and vin number. The horns are correct date coded 5th month 1972. The car has been recently fully serviced at 34,380 miles and has been impeccably maintained in the current ownership. The two way rear door opens to the original boot carpet, wheel arch vinyl covers, venetian blinds and below the original Masonite flooring is the spare tyre, tools and spare hoses.
