The HJ Holden arrived as a facelift of the HQ in 1974. Visually distinguished by its more muscular squared off looks, the chassis dimensions remained unchanged but gave the illusion of a longer car thanks to protruding bumpers and revised front end.
The Sandman arrived in October that year, riding the wave of 70s ‘sand, sex and surf’. The Sandman nameplate debuted on the HQ, and before that – a utility was just that.
A workhorse or a load-hauler that you tossed paint tins, ladders and a wheelbarrow into without much thought or care. All of a sudden, here was a version with loud colours, lairy stripes, GTS instrument and steering wheel. All of a sudden, the van was cool.
These days, Sandmans survive in extremely low numbers. The rarest is the HQ Sandman that arrived late in the HQ’s life cycle. The HJ although more common, is arguably the looker of the two – with its squared front end lending itself better to van and ute bodies.
It looks to be a stunning, example that presents fantastically.
It’s hard to fault both outside and in, and should be worth investigating if you’re after a weekend Aussie classic.
