Seller's Description
If National Lampoon's Vacation is your movie trip, then this could be your new set of wheels. 1976 Chevrolet Impala Clamshell Wagon imported to Australia by GMH as a demo model and converted locally. This is huge - 6 metres long and weighs in at 3 tons. The unique 'clamshell' tailgate design allowed the rear power-operated glass to slide up into the roof as the tailgate (manually or with power assist), dropped below the load floor. The power tailgate, the first of its kind, ultimately supplanted the manual tailgate which required marked effort to lift from storage. This design was shared with other full-sized GM wagons from Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick. Running a recently reconditioned all original 400 small block engine rebuilt by Geoff Hayes Race Engines, Brisbane, QLD and brand new $4,500 Skip White heavy duty T-350 automatic gearbox (capable of 900HP) mated to a 10 bolt LSD. Runs 20 miles per gallon all day with an Edelbrock Performer manifold, Edelbrock carby, ported and polished heads, extractors and new exhaust producing 325HP. Great condition for its age with new paint with no rust at all. Factory fitted with working airconditioning, power steering and power tail gate. The interior is in original condition with a tear in the front seat and otherwise in excellent condition. The car has been set up to cruise and is perfect mechanically and seats 6 with loads of room to spare. Brisbane, QLD car. (Ref: 5376)
