THE STORY One of the most iconic Australian built cars of all time, the 1988 HSV VL SS Group A Walkinshaw was the result of a partnership between Holden and UK-based Tom Walkinshaw Racing. Its unique aerodynamic package was designed to reduce drag at speed and increase vehicle stability. The car was built on the “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” theory that dominated Holden’s marketing and racing program for decades. Only 750 examples were built to homologate the VL Commodore for the Group A racing competition. All vehicles were powered by a Holden 4987cc V8 and were the first Holdens to have electronic fuel injection. The engines had twin throttle-body intakes, a custom plenum and power was put to the road via a 5-speed Borg-warner manual transmission. All cars were finished in Panorama Silver paint and had 16-inch, five spoke alloy wheels that were stopped by 4-wheel disc brakes – the front brakes being ventilated. THE CAR Build number 650 of 750 and produced in July 1988, this Walkinshaw is in outstanding immaculate condition and has travelled only 29,848 kms over the past 35 years. Believed to be a 4-owner car, the current South Australian owner has held the car for over 18 years and travelled approximately 5,000km during that time. During his period of stewardship, the car has been serviced every 12 moths and stored in an air filtered Carcoon when not used. HSV and the HDT/HSV owners car club of SA have verified the car. The HSV verification certificate is on hand. The car retains its original Bridgestone RE71 spare tyre in the boot. The only modification is the exhaust system, undertaken by the previous owner. The original Group A headers and front pipe section are still with the car and go with it to the new owner. A chance to own a prized piece of Australian motorsport history. These rare Group As continue to appreciate over time.
