Seller's Description
After much hand wringing and indecision, I have decided to sell my treasured 1991 VW Single Cab Transporter. Having owned “Hans” for 15 years, I planned on keeping him in the family for many years, especially after he was “retired” from commercial duty. Since 1997, I have invested more than $20,000 in upgrading and restoring Hans, so allow me to indulge with some history. Hans was purchased new in early 1992 by the then Telecom, finished in the factory white enamel and the standard tan vinyl interior. A very useful Trundle Tray was fitted prior to delivery, vastly improving the use and practicality of the unique storage area underneath. In 1998, Hans was re-painted in our then corporate colour; violet/blue mica (the colour of the Liberty wagon I owned at the time), and still presents hard and glossy. High quality Solace triple laminate window tinting was applied – I still have the 300,000km warranty certificate. Prestige Air Conditioning fitted their excellent dash top mounted unit and it still works fantastically, even in 400 plus heat. Serviced every three years, a new compressor was fitted two years ago. Performance Titan 15 x 7 alloys were fitted in 1999, selected for their commercial load rating of at least 1 tonne. To further improve ride and handling, premium Bilstein shock absorbers were fitted by Heaseman’s. The final improvements were lining the 2.7m long tray in what has proven to be an extremely durable Bulldog polyurethane coating and the fitment of a very tough reinforced vinyl tonneau, again, still on the back of Hans and still waterproof! The original wooden slats which were riveted to the tray corrugations were removed when the lining was applied, and new red cedar replacements were manufactured. These have never been fitted but will be supplied with Hans. Since 1997, Hans has been mostly a daily driver, with light duties occasionally and rarely a heavy pallet or two. At approximately 130,000 kms, the gear change would not move out of 2nd, resulting in a new crown wheel and pinion – essentially a gearbox re-build expertly done by noted VW specialist Mark Hammond at a cost of $4500. After travelling 176,000 kms, one of the cylinder heads cracked, so I decided to embark on a complete engine rebuild. Vintage VW in Campsie undertook the comprehensive long block engine reconditioning. I didn’t hold back with having a proper job done, as the eventual bill of just under $11,000 would indicate (yes, I was crazy!). This included all new hoses, a new clutch, new exhaust and full front suspension rebuild, new rear brakes, replacement of all fuel tank hoses and breather hoses. Please email me for a copy of the significant and detailed. Needless to say, I planned on keeping Hans for a long time! At just over $2000, the interior trim was completely reupholstered with a combination of durable chamois coloured vinyl and matching synthetic suede, including a brand new AAS racing seat fitted with a hand pumped adjustable lumbar support. All suede surfaces treated with genuine ScotchGuard. The trim is still immaculate and looks vastly better than the Spartan original interior. Hans has been serviced by Vintage VW ever since, with an oil change (full synthetic) every 5000 kms. The service book is COMPLETELY up to date – a rarity for this type of vehicle. I have kept the original manuals and folder, plus have almost all receipts for the large amount invested so far. There is absolutely NO rust anywhere on the body or underneath – thanks to the tonneau and constant garaging. The front bumper and grill area has stone chipping evident, but what you’d expect over almost 15 years and 220,000 kms. Each side of the vehicle has some minor dings, but way less than you’d expect on a work vehicle. In 1997, I fitted a high quality Pioneer head unit with a dual Alpine speaker set up – it still sounds incredible. The automatic aerial hit a tree branch some years ago so does not retract completely. The rubber flooring is unmarked, other than a small split and the dash and switch gear are not worn or cracked. Hans has NOT been a tradie work horse! I also fitted a tachometer in place of the original and faulty clock. This was sourced from a late model T3 Caravelle and is far more useful than a time piece. Any VW transporter enthusiast will not be disappointed with Hans. Ideal not only for the occasional trip to the tip on the weekend, but perfect for a visit to the CBD where you can take advantage of the loading zones (as I often do!). The gear change is quirky, but solid and all controls work perfectly. The last of the T3’s are becoming much sought after and finding a single or dual cab as good as this example is nigh impossible. Hans will cruise quietly all day long at 120kph! Recently serviced and registered until December, there is nothing you’ll need to do to Hans other than drive him home. I have around 90 pictures online, so please email me for a link.
