Call to save Ghostbusters Cadillac
The Ghostbusters fan website - GBFans.com - has started a petition to purchase 'Ecto 1A' from 1989's Ghostbusters II in order to prevent the rare vehicle from, allegedly, being sent to crusher by current owners, Sony Pictures.
One of three Miller-Meteor ambulance conversions used across the two films, Ecto-1A had previously been on show in Florida, but has gradually deteriorated over the years; suffering the ravages of time, weather and light-fingered fans keen to get a piece of movie history.
Back in 2007, Sony Pictures commissioned a restoration of Ecto-1 (from the original Ghostbusters) and were on track to restore Ecto-1A last year before funding was pulled from the project. Now, relegated to the Sony backlot, the Cadillac is in poor condition, partially stripped, with a broken windscreen, missing parts, and accident damage.
Sony has reportedly shown no interest in selling the car to date, but the GB Fan community are hoping a petition of at least 10,000 signatures (over 4,500 have been received as of October 17, 2013) will convince Sony to change their mind and sell it to the enthusiasts for "scrap" price, the actual dollar value of which hasn't been revealed.
The Ghostbusters fan community are calling for more signatures for the petition, with a possible crowdfunding initiative, like Kickstarter, to purchase the Cadillac - if Sony agrees to sell it - and fund its restoration to original movie condition.
