XY Falcon GT-HOs remain a hot ticket in the collectable car market, but this Phase III is hotter than most, being the subject of an extensive restoration and awarded the best of its type in Australia.
Consigned with Slattery Auctions & Valuations, this 7/71 built GT-HO Phase III has been a Western Australia car for all its life and was originally delivered to Anderson Ford in Perth.
This car retains its original, matching numbers drivetrain - a ‘high output’ 351 cubic inch V8 with ‘shaker’ bonnet scoop, matched to a 4-speed Toploader manual transmission and 9-inch differential – but this is just part of its appeal.
The ACCHS report on this car shows it was ordered in Track Red with a black vinyl interior. The only options checked were the 36-gallon long range fuel tank and ‘mandatory option’ seat belts.
Of the 300 XY GT-HO Phase IIIs built, only 24 were painted Track Red (a far less common choice than Vermillion Fire) and only 19 matched this with black vinyl trim. This car’s other options make it one of just three from the 300-unit Phase III run with the same build specification.
After 33 years with the second owner, this GT-HO's third and current owners subjected it to a comprehensive restoration after purchasing it in 2016. NOS parts were used throughout to ensure the finished car was as close to C1971 OEM specification as possible.
All the work on this authentic restoration was carried out in Western Australia by experts and GT specialists.
It rolls on a set of period-correct 15x7-inch ‘Bathurst Globe’ alloys, which became available in 1972, replacing the more familiar 14x6-inch 5-slot steel wheels that carried over from the XW GT-HO and were fitted to most GT-HO Phase IIIs when new (this car’s spare is a GT 5-slot).
Since the restoration was completed, this GT-HO Phase III has covered less than 1,000 miles and still looks resto-fresh, especially in the engine bay and interior.
In 2019, this car was taken to the 18th Falcon GT Nationals in Adelaide that attracted more than 300 cars from all over the country, covering the breadth of classic (XR to XB) and modern (EB to FG) Falcon GT production.
Against strong competition from all over Australia, including Phase IIIs owned by notable identities in the GT community, this car won 'Best Restored GT-HO Phase III'. Since no GT Nationals has been held since 2019, it remains the champion in its class.
This car is consigned with Slattery Auctions & Valuations, the same Perth auction house that sold another restored GT-HO Phase III for a record $1.15 million in 2021. Will this car break that record?
