Ferrari "Sharknose" to be auctioned in US
To be auctioned by Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the Ferrari is one of two design icons consigned for the August sale, the other being a 1934 Packard Twelve 1108 Sport Sedan with coachwork by Dietrich.
Described by Gooding as possibly the most important 250 GT SWB ever to be presented at public auction, the pre-auction estimate attached to the 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Speciale is US$14million - US$16million (AU$17,585,000 - AU$20,097,000 approx.). What's also noteworthy is that the Gooding auction marks the first time this car has been offered at a public auction.
Built for and personally owned by Nuccio Bertone to showcase his company at the Geneva and Torino Auto Shows in 1962, this one-off "sharknose" Berlinetta Speciale was one of the first cars penned by the well-known stylist, Giorgetto Giugiaro, while working for Nuccio Bertone. The two worked together to create what Gooding call one of the most viscerally moving designs in Ferrari's history, which was inspired by the world championship-winning Grand Prix car - the Ferrari 156 F1.
Giugiaro's exterior design paid homage to the 156 F1 with the distinct "sharknose" front-end treatment, while the interior was pure Bertone, luxuriously finished in burgundy leather hides with a dashboard matching the exterior colour - Blu Notte Metallizzato.
This "sharknose" SWB was the crown jewel in the exclusive Lorenzo Zambrano collection for over 30 years.
Gooding and Co's Pebble Beach Auctions take place on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, at the 'Equestrian Center', Pebble Beach, California. Further details and information on other lots can be viewed at: goodingco.com
