Mercedes-AMG GT4 revealed

The latest GT-spec racer from Mercedes-AMG made its official debut on the eve of the Spa 24-hour race in July.

Based on the acclaimed Mercedes-AMG GT R road car, the GT4 racer is due for release, as part of the German brand’s Customer Racing Programme, by the end of 2017.

Responding to the growth of the new GT4 category, the racer takes much from what Mercedes-AMG has already learned on their GT3 program and is said to be fully matured and proven as a competition machine, thanks to extensive testing by AMG development drivers, including multiple DTM champion Bernd Schneider.

“We have taken the time that was necessary for development and testing to be able to offer a perfect product. We aren’t entering a new segment to finish second,” says Stefan Wendl, head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing.

Power comes from the 4.0-litre biturbo V8 used in the GT road cars, delivering 375kW and 600Nm in race application, matched to a sequential six-speed transaxle.

Extensive use of aluminium and carbon fibre in the chassis and body structure results in a 1390kg weight (around 250kg lighter than the GT R road car, depending on balance of performance), but the roll cage is high-strength steel; part of an FIA-homologated package that includes a carbon safety cell, roof escape hatch and fire extinguishing system.

Aerodynamics are optimised compared to the road car, including a broad front splitter and rear wing with a wide range of adjustability.

Inside, there’s a fully-adjustable steering wheel and pedals, with the overall cabin layout said to benefit less-experienced drivers. The electronics package is described as similarly user-friendly and includes both torque and traction control, as well as adjustable ABS.

Suitable for a number of racing categories, including the Australian GT Trophy series, the Mercedes-AMG GT4 will be priced at 198,850 Euros (around AU$295,000 direct exchange) when it reaches customer teams later this year.
