XY Falcon GT-HO tops Shannons Summer auction
As with past Shannons auctions, the demand for heritage number plates was hot, with a Victorian ‘80’ plate selling for $1.6 million and early NSW plates selling for a combined $7.6 million.
While the auction was a strong one for plates, it less so for cars.
A 1972 Ford XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III, the gold standard for Australian-made collectable cars, sold for what’s believed to be somewhere in the $500K range. As these models have sold for high six-figure sums and even $1 million in the past, it perhaps suggests the bubble for classic Aussie muscle has burst - or at least deflated.
Next best was a 1980 Aston Martin V8 Volante convertible that sold for $274,000, closely followed by a 1969 Holden HK Monaro GTS 307 that made $255,000, while a restored, award-winning 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE V8 coupe went for $245,000.
Other notable results included $166,000 for a 1958 Chevrolet Corvette ‘fuelie,’ $144,000 for a 1962 Jaguar E-Type and $99,000 for a 2000 Dodge Viper RT/10, while a 1970 Holden HT Monaro 253 sold for $120,000 and a 1976 Holden LX Torana SS coupe went for $110,000.
European cars that performed well included a 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 that sold for $225,000, a 1962 Porsche 356B coupe that made $205,071 and a rare 1974 Alfa Romeo Montreal that sold for $120,000.
Good results for No Reserve offerings included $131,000 for a 1968 Mercedes-Benz ‘Grosser’ 600 saloon, $130,000 for a 2014 FPV GT-F, $129,000 for a 1998 Ferrari F355 F1 Berlinetta, $100,000 for a restored 1971 Chrysler VG Valiant Pacer coupe and $64,000 for a 1970 Mini Cooper S.
