Seller's Description
The W108/109 S-Class saloon was the pinnacle of luxury car design from the time of its introduction in 1965, featuring stylish, classical lines by Paul Bracq, a roomy and beautifully appointed interior and was powered by a range of six-cylinder engines. Demand from the American market for more power saw the introduction in 1970 of a V8 model with the new M116 3.5-litre engine featuring a single-overhead camshaft per bank, Bosch fuel injection and a healthy 200bhp on tap. In the best tradition of Stuttgart's finest, the S-Class boasted state of the art safety equipment, roadholding and luxury features and was built to the highest standards. Offering effortless performance, the 280 SE 3.5 was usually equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission using a fluid flywheel but a small number were sold with the four-speed manual. In production for just two full years, the 280 SE 3.5 was built in limited numbers and just 11,309 were built in total - the vast majority of these going to North America and surviving examples are few and far between in Australia. This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 3.5 is finished in silver over a red interior and is powered by a 3.5-litre V8 paired with a floor shift automatic transmission. Features include 14″ steel wheels, air conditioning and a Becker radio. The car reportedly spent much of its life in Victoria and was subsequently relocated to South Australia. Recent work has since included servicing the rear brakes along with an oil change and a replacement thermostat and valve cover gaskets. The seats and door panels are trimmed in re MB-Tex, and the interior features a contrasting black dash with immaculate woodgrain inserts as well as darker red carpeting. Amenities include air conditioning, a rear window defroster, a clock, and floor mats. The dash and associated woodwork is in excellent condition with no fading and minimal wear is evident on the headliner, upholstery, and interior brightwork as shown in the gallery. The Becker radio is fully functional, however the air conditioning will need a re-gas. Mechanically this car is in superb condition and has benefitted from a recent major service. The fuel injection system works perfectly with the car starting well and running very smoothly even from cold. With all major wear items such as brakes, cooling hoses, shocks and tyres replaced in recent years, this is a car with very little to spend. Paint and body work is as good as you will find on a car of this age, with zero rust and only small paint imperfections. Chromework is stunning and this presentation coupled to such a beautiful interior means this is a very rare find.
