Seller's Description
I purchased this rare Jag cabriolet whilst in the UK a few years ago. I was looking for the 3.6L and 5 speed Getrag manual gearbox combination. Once found, I had it sent back to Australia. My wife said I could buy the car on the proviso that I fitted a back seat and safety belts, which I did. It definitely makes better use of the space, than a rather clunky stowage box.
“Introduced in October 1983, the Jaguar XJS 3.6 was intended to be a sharper, more sporting foil to the range's established, soporific 5.3 litre V12 model. To emphasise the difference, it was fitted with a five-speed manual Getrag gearbox as standard. With some 225bhp and 240lbft of torque on tap courtesy of its 3590cc, dohc, 24 valve straight-six, the claimed 140mph top speed and 0-60mph time of 7.4 seconds were a near match for the V12. Yet when such performance was not called upon, it could reputedly return thirty miles per gallon, a feat beyond the V12's capabilities. The brand new AJ6 unit also had the advantage of being considerably lighter. This weight saving allowed Jaguar engineers to alter the all round independent, double wishbone suspension's coil spring rates giving notably better turn-in and less body roll. A revised, more positive feel to the power steering improved the handling still further. Available in coupe or cabriolet guises (Jaguar's first open car since the Series III E-type was phased out in 1974), the 3.6 was a strong seller.”
I purchased this car with a very low 72,000 miles on the clock. It now reads 93,000 miles. The fuel injected, DOHC 3.6L AJ6 engine is very strong. It runs cool and smooth and doesn’t have any issues. It doesn’t use oil or coolant. In fact I’m delighted how cool it runs, even in this 38C heat with the aircon on. It covers 500km on 60L or so of fuel, better than my wife’s Subaru Outback and much better than any Series III I’ve owned.
I’ve undertaken various work on the car over the last couple of years, in addition to routine maintenance. This work includes:
This car is an absolute pleasure to drive. It has a great stance on the road and attracts plenty of onlookers. I’ve never driven it hard, although occasionally I’ve enjoyed slightly above average speeds on the freeway. It has fantastic road feel with no shudders or vibrations.
Like all 24yo cars, this one shows a few minor blemishes, but still presents well in its original paintwork. There is one very small ding in the front RH quarter panel, which I didn’t notice when I bought it. There are a couple of small rust bubbles on the seamline of sill and rear quarter panels, just forward of the rear wheels. Rather than patch them up, I’ll leave it to the new owner as to what they’d rather do. This car passed a rigorous pit inspection following importation a few years ago.
As with any vehicle, I’d suggest that any interested parties come and have a good look and take it for a test drive. I will answer all questions to the best of my ability and send additional photos on request.
