Based upon a shortened XJ6 platform, XJ-S was aimed very much for the American market, which at the time of the car’s development in the early 70s was dominated by health and safety legislation. Convertibles were also expected to be banned, so Jaguar didn’t bother making a drop head – until 13 years later. Instead, with its peculiar fixed-head bodywork (those rear buttresses were body strengtheners to enable an initial mid-engine layout proposal that was dropped), fat rubber bumpers and curious oval headlamps it looked like no Jaguar before. The XJ-S was Jag’s most expensive car ever when it was launched, costing £8900, which put it firmly in the Ferrari and Porsche bracket. This was intentional, as Jaguar wanted to move away from its bargain tag and appeal to a new buying base and keep E-type owners satisfied. It boasted all the right ingredients to make a great grand-tourer and it succeeded. ABOUT THIS CAR NZ New - imported new into New Zealand (sold new by Archibalds) we understand this to be one of three in NZ with genuine TWR Kit from the factory. Jaguar all alloy 24 valve, AJ6 Twin cam, EFI, 3.6 ltr - 221 bhp. TWR Wheels Top speed 240kph Various servicing and maintenance records available by Archibalds and Jag specialists Messrs. John Finlay Motors among others. Good straight body with very nice paintwork. Being NZ new, it has a very clean rust free body with beautiful paintwork. Interior - we would describe it as immaculate. Hood lining in good order. Carpet, upholstery (seats / door cards etc) all in top condition. Mechanically - car is sound and well maintained - no unduly noises and drives beautifully. This is a rare car that can be driven anywhere with confidence. We love Jaguars and make no secret of such fact. In our opinion, they have so much character. This is a stunning example owned and loved by its previous owners. It exudes charm and commands such elegance and presence. It runs perfectly and everything in it works plus outright acceleration, while satisfying, is only a distraction to the Jag’s true strength of soaking up roadways. I suppose any car that lasts in production for 21 years, and which was selling better at its end than at the beginning, can’t be bad, can it?... So why not take a look at this XJ-S, a true classic, offering qualities unheard of for the price, both when new and now. Such is the value for money that even paying top dollar for a top cat is only MGB money anyway and you’re certainly getting a lot of prestigious classic for your money. Values are starting to soar for good examples and this one's desirable being a factory kitted TWR.
