Seller's Description
With the factory fitted twin SU carburettors, the engine developed 140 horsepower and the Daimler could reach nearly 180 kph, performance which was accompanied by a lovely V8 exhaust note through the twin pipes. Most Daimler 2.5 V8s also came with Borg-Warner's excellent T35 automatic transmission that worked well with the engine's characteristics. The Daimler 2.5 V8 had a warm, traditional ambience with a walnut veneer dashboard with full instrumentation, an adjustable split bench front seat, lush carpets, and West of England headlining. This Daimler came with leather upholstery. Looking at it dispassionately, you would logically buy a Daimler 2.5 V8 saloon over its Jaguar Mk2 stablemate. After all, the Daimler boasted a V8 engine compared to the Jaguar’s 2.4/3.4/3.8 straight six, was finished to higher level of luxury, and there were far fewer made, less than 18,000 in the case of the Daimler compared to almost 84,000 Jaguars. That has made the Daimler great value in the classic car market, especially with good examples around, such as this 1964 car. Bought from an official of the Daimler & Landcaster Club in early 2016 by the previous owner, the 2.5 V8 saloon was the recipient of an Opalescent Silver Grey paintwork refresh in the 1990s and is now showing a few blemishes of age. There are some very minor blistering and cracks evident. Inside, our Daimler is finished in grey leather which remains in good condition, as does the extensive woodwork, while the original radio works, sadly the clock doesn’t. There’s a complete original tool kit in the boot, which is neatly carpeted and comes with the jack. Under the shapely bonnet, the 2.5 litre V8 has a non-original aftermarket alloy radiator, along with a manually activated thermatic fan, Bosch electronic ignition, and a new battery was fitted recently. Recent work has included adding a second (electric) fuel pump, new hoses in the engine bay, and a generator rebuild. This Daimler also comes with an enormous amount of supportive paperwork, much of it from its previous Club member owner. There’s a folder containing its service history with numerous receipts, another one with original paperwork – including the Owner’s manual – showing its factory order and subsequent shipping to Australia. There’s also a Lucas parts catalogue. Another folder contains a plethora of reference materials including relevant magazine technical articles, plus the dedicated clubman’s personal notes and tips. And finally, there’s a trio of factory Maintenance handbooks, a Daimler Service manual, a Daimler Parts catalogue, and several other official publications. Winner of the Best Car 1960 – 1970 award at the 2014 Daimler & Lancaster Club National Rally, this ’64 2.5 V8 saloon presents possibilities for the keen enthusiast. It would be simple to using it as a daily driver, or on special club events. This car is an absolute gem to drive and will not disappoint a genuine buyer. Currently on non-transferable club registration. LVD3382
